Jaguar Land Rover
Summary
Mission
Design a feature allowing a connected vehicle to become a node within a Smart Device ecosystem, and control home Smart Devices utilizing vehicle status and location.
My Role
As Lead UX Designer I designed this product end-to-end including research, UX, and UI.
Defining Use Cases
Goal
Collaborate with internal stakeholders to define primary use cases. Utilize first-hand research to help further define them .
My Role
I defined the use cases, then presented them as illustrations, not infotainment screens. This allowed me to focus the discussion on functionality and usability, not UI.
Engineering Alignment
Goal
Determine if proposed functionality and features are within the capabilities of the vehicle’s connected infrastructure.
My Role
I worked with the product owner to refine the use cases based on engineering feedback.
Designing the experience
Goal
Design UX flows that maintain consistency with the remainder of the infotainment system while also being consistent with the UX of Smart Device mobile apps.
My Role
I designed the individual screens and UX flows.
Screen Design
Goal
Align the UI with the component library and introduce new icons as needed.
My Role
I designed the UI which utilized only two new components. I designed numerous new icons which were also added to our library.
Smart Hub and APIs
The integration of Smart Device and Hub APIs was key to feature viability. Once initial feature mapping was completed, the developers measured this against existing APIs.
Key screens
Once functionality was determined, key screens were created. Utilizing UI components, the JLR style guide, as well as industry standard UX interactive patters, the new feature seamlessly fit within the vehicle’s existing infotainment framework.
Usability Testing
Goal
Create a fully functional prototype and script to facilitate usability testing with outside participants to gain product insights and quantifiable and quantifiable data.
My Role
Working collaboratively with the UX Research team, we created a testing script that covered all primary functionality. After that, I created a fully functioning prototype.
Outcome
Results
This work represents the first Smart Vehicle product for Jaguar Land Rover. By exploring advances in smart device technology and introducing it into the vehicle ecosystem, drivers can realize new value with the cars.
